“Nostalgia is a sentiment of loss and displacement, but it is also a romance with one’s own phantasy. Nostalgic love can only survive in a long-distance relationship. A cinematic image of nostalgia is a double exposure, or a superimposition of two images—of home and abroad, of past and present, of dream and everyday life.”

- Svetlana Boym

One of the soundtracks of my childhood was “Un Rinconsito En El Cielo” by Ramón Ayala. It was a song about looking for a little piece of heaven apart from all, and being with the one you love. Together, the rhythm of the bajo sexto, accordion, and the sporadic, but faithful grito callwas an uplifting, energizing melody. During the parties at my great-grandmother’s home in South Texas, there was an unstoppable energy of dancing and singing. The furniture, pushed against the walls of our living room to make an impromptu dance floor, became makeshift seating and a place to rest—your drink or your feet.

Soon, your relatives embark on a journey into your own private and collective mythology where the local becomes universal.
